Cykling utan ålder marks 10 years in Uppsala

The nonprofit Cykling utan ålder in Uppsala celebrates its 10th anniversary. Founded in 2016 by Göran Albjär to let seniors cycle again, it hosts an open house on May 12 at Danspaviljongen.

Cykling utan ålder was launched in Uppsala in 2016 by Göran Albjär and Therese Uggla. Volunteers take seniors on bike rides to let them feel the wind in their hair and see the city. The bikes are stationed at care homes and seat a driver plus two passengers.

Volunteer Dag Sundberg describes the joy it brings. "I've never seen so many people smile, laugh and wave as when cycling with one or two seniors. I think it's worth every time," he says. Thilda Thunander now leads the group and trains new volunteers.

"Anyone can volunteer as long as they can cycle. We have everyone from 18 to 70-year-olds. Many riders say it's their best day in a long time," Thunander says. Rides are planned with passengers, who might revisit childhood spots or explore new areas.

The idea originated in Denmark and operates in over 40 countries. The group marks the milestone with an open house on May 12 at 2 p.m. at Danspaviljongen in Hamnspången, Uppsala. Visitors can try the bikes and join a group ride. "One should become a volunteer, of course. Especially to give our seniors moments of joy now and then," says founder Göran Albjär.
