Devin Williams calls out Yankees fans after signing with Mets

Reliever Devin Williams signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the New York Mets on Monday, staying in New York but leaving the Yankees behind. After a challenging 2025 season with the Yankees, Williams posted a pointed message on Instagram directed at Yankees fans. The post highlighted fan reactions to his performance and his move to the crosstown rival.

Devin Williams, who spent his only season with the New York Yankees in 2025, has joined the New York Mets on a three-year, $51 million contract signed on Monday. Traded to the Yankees from the Milwaukee Brewers prior to the season, Williams faced a turbulent year marked by inconsistent performances that drew boos from the Yankee Stadium crowd during subpar outings.

Williams started slowly, recording a 10.03 ERA in his first 14 appearances. He improved significantly in June with a 0.93 ERA, echoing his dominant form from earlier in his career. However, his struggles returned, as he posted a 6.75 ERA from July through his initial September appearance. Williams rebounded to end the regular season with nine straight scoreless outings, followed by four more in the postseason, finishing with a 4.79 ERA overall.

Advanced metrics suggest Williams may have been unlucky. His Statcast expected ERA was 3.09, about two runs better than his actual mark, and his FIP stood at 2.68.

On Thursday, Williams shared a message on Instagram aimed at Yankees fans: "For a bunch of people that didn’t want me back on your team, y'all sure are mad in the DM’s." The post appears to reference fan responses to his 2025 season and his signing with the Mets.

The deal bolsters the Mets' bullpen with a proven closer for 2026. The team remains interested in re-signing their current closer, Edwin Díaz.
