Government announces public space rescue and jobs for 2026 World Cup

In preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Mexican government will rescue over 4,000 public spaces and create 10,600 artistic murals. Additionally, 5,000 job vacancies will open for young people via the Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro program. These efforts aim to promote sports, culture, and employment across communities nationwide.

During President Claudia Sheinbaum's Pueblo Conference, Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez outlined actions for the 'Social World Cup' ahead of the 2026 tournament. Over 4,000 public spaces, including sports fields in various states, will be rescued with involvement from federal, state, and municipal governments. 'They are places to create bonds of affection and cooperation,' emphasized Rodríguez, underscoring their role in community life, recreation, and sports practice for girls, boys, youth, and adults.

Simultaneously, walls will be recovered for artistic murals, enabling 10,600 spaces in coordination with the Mexican Institute of Youth. This initiative will promote cultural expression, traditions, and urban talent, contributing to a 'festival of colors, harmony, and peace' during the event. 'There are many more instances participating in the sum of the Social World Cup,' highlighted the official.

Meanwhile, Labor and Social Welfare Secretary Marath Baruch Bolaños López announced 5,000 vacancies in the Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro program for activities in tourism, culture, hospitality, and traveler reception. Registration will open in April 2026 via the official platform. Beneficiaries, aged 18 to 29 and not employed or studying at the start, will receive the minimum wage—8,840 pesos in 2025, with an adjustment pending—, IMSS insurance, and 12 months of training. Requirements include attending 5 to 8 hours daily, five days a week, and providing documents such as official ID, CURP, proof of address, and a recent photo. Upon completion, they will receive a certificate of acquired skills.

These measures integrate efforts to maximize the social impact of the World Cup, to be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
