Helena Bonham Carter, known for roles in Fight Club and as Princess Margaret in The Crown, was originally set to join an ensemble cast for season 4 of HBO's anthology series The White Lotus. Deadline reports that series creator Mike White determined after her initial scenes that the character did not fit as conceived. The role, believed to be central to the storyline, prompted a quick decision to rework it entirely. HBO issued a statement confirming the change: “With filming just underway on Season 4 of 'The White Lotus,' it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won't get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.” Filming on the season proceeds as planned, with locations including Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monaco, and Paris during the Cannes Film Festival. The cast still features Chris Messina, Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, and Max Greenfield. Mike White will write and direct all episodes, maintaining the show's tradition of A-list talent in exotic resort settings with satirical takes on privilege.
