Jamar Champ killed in Houston Cybertruck wrong-way crash

Jamar Champ, estranged husband of reality star Masika Kalysha, died early Tuesday after his Tesla Cybertruck was struck head-on by a wrong-way BMW on Houston's I-10 Katy Freeway. The collision ignited a fire in the BMW and sent the Cybertruck into an 18-wheeler, killing both drivers. Authorities are investigating the cause of the wrong-way driving.

The crash occurred around 12:05 a.m. on October 29, 2025, on the eastbound lanes of the I-10 Katy Freeway near the Washington Avenue and Westcott Street exit in Houston, Texas. According to the Houston Police Department, a silver BMW was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it collided head-on with a silver Tesla Cybertruck heading toward downtown. The impact caused the BMW to catch fire immediately and propelled the Cybertruck into the path of an eastbound blue Freightliner 18-wheeler.

The Cybertruck's driver, 38-year-old Jamar Champ, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead. The BMW driver was killed at the scene, though their identity has not been released. The 18-wheeler driver remained unharmed. Houston Police Sergeant Rebecca Dallas confirmed the sequence of events, noting that emergency calls reported the wrong-way vehicle shortly before the collision.

Champ, an entrepreneur and former football player at North Dakota State University in 2005-2006, was the estranged husband of 'Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood' star Masika Kalysha. The couple married in 2021 and shared a 3-year-old daughter, Amari; Champ was also stepfather to Kalysha's 9-year-old daughter, Khari, from her relationship with rapper Fetty Wap. They separated in 2023, with Kalysha filing for annulment or divorce in 2024.

Kalysha alluded to the tragedy in a post on X early Tuesday: "God woke me up at 2:00am… I couldn’t sleep. I didn’t know why. Jesus Christ … Pray for me and my kids please." In an Instagram video, she said, "I am in shambles please respect my family and my children at this time," and asked media to refrain from posting details until she could inform her children, adding, "I don’t want my kids to find out at school before I can tell them."

Police have not determined why the BMW was driving the wrong way, with possibilities including impairment or a medical emergency under investigation. An autopsy is planned to assess impairment. The eastbound lanes were closed for several hours during cleanup. The Houston Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Division is seeking witnesses or dashcam footage.
