Director Josefina Molina has died on Saturday in Madrid at the age of 89 after a long illness. Considered one of the first women to direct films in Spain, she paved the way for later generations.
Molina was born in Córdoba in 1936. She graduated in 1969 as the first woman to earn a directing degree from the Escuela Oficial de Cine. Her notable works include Función de noche (1981) and the series Teresa de Jesús.
She was the first to receive the Premio Nacional de Cinematografía and the Goya de Honor. She founded the Asociación de Mujeres Cineastas y de Medios Audiovisuales (CIMA), where she served as honorary president.
The Academia de Cine and CIMA confirmed her death. They highlighted her fight for equality and her feminist perspective in Spanish audiovisual media.
