The Machakos County Assembly risks halting operations after three months without funding amid a standoff with Governor Wavinya Ndeti.
During a heated sitting on Tuesday June 30, assembly members called for the impeachment of the county executive committee member for finance, economic planning and revenue management. Speaker Anne Kiusya stated the assembly seeks impeachment on grounds of gross violation of the Constitution or other laws, abuse of office, gross misconduct and incompetence.
MCAs noted the county wage bill has exceeded the 35 per cent required by law and now stands at around 60 per cent according to the Controller of Budget. Mbiuni MCA Peter Kilonzo said this shows violation of the law while Kinanie Ward MCA Francis Kavyu added that the assembly's constitutional functions of representation and service delivery have been severely affected.
The Speaker confirmed a formal request has been submitted to the Senate for intervention. This adds to long-standing challenges in the assembly where the current speaker faced impeachment in 2025.
