Madrid's Catholic Church criticizes Almeida's policies on homeless people

The Archdiocese of Madrid and dozens of Christian communities have expressed rejection of measures by the city council and regional government affecting homeless people and immigrants.

The Mesa por la Hospitalidad of the Archdiocese of Madrid published a statement on Friday denouncing the city council's order to remove belongings of homeless people without prior notice. The text states that this measure increases the vulnerability of those already in extreme situations.

Various groups also reject the Community of Madrid's decision to limit the transport pass to registered residents. They consider this policy discriminatory against migrants and contrary to the universality of rights.

Thirty-one Christian communities signed another joint statement criticizing the policies as segregationist and aporophobic. The signatories note that these decisions come shortly after Pope León XIV's visit to Madrid two weeks ago.
