A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for attempted murder following a machete attack in central Stockholm in 2019. The attack is linked to the 2005 murder of Gülay Karagöz.
The district court sentenced the man on Monday for the attack on the previously convicted murderer serving a life sentence. The victim, released from prison in 2018, had confessed to the murder of Gülay Karagöz during an investigation.
The convicted man, a relative of the 2005 victim, claimed he acted in self-defense. The court rejected this, noting the injuries indicated an attack from behind and that he had evaded police for six years.
The man left Sweden after the attack and was charged in May this year. He must also pay 256 000 kronor in damages to the injured party.
