Mario Delgado denies 800 million pesos payment to CNTE for ending protest

The CNTE Sección 22 lifted its plantón in Mexico City's Zócalo after 19 days. Education Secretary Mario Delgado rejected claims that the government paid 800 million pesos to secure the withdrawal.

The Sección 22 of Oaxaca from the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación agreed to lift the camp on Friday during a state assembly. The teachers will return to their state to reorganize, though they will maintain their demands, including the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law.

Yenny Araceli Pérez Martínez, general secretary of Sección 22, said the decision will be presented to the CNTE's National Representative Assembly. Removal of structures in the historic center began immediately.

Mario Delgado denied that the 800 million pesos were a payment to the union. He explained that the resources come from the education budget and are allocated to states such as Oaxaca, Chiapas and Guerrero to create teaching positions and address educational lag.

The official stressed that the funds do not pass through the hands of the CNTE or any union. He noted that this scheme has been applied for three years and responds to educational diagnostics, not negotiations over the plantón.
