More NATO countries pledge increased aid to Ukraine

Pressure is mounting on European NATO members to bolster military support for Ukraine following Wednesday's meeting in Brussels. An additional dozen countries have agreed to purchase US weapons through the PURL initiative. More than half of NATO's member states have now joined, with Sweden among those ready to increase its contribution.

NATO's defense ministers gathered on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the headquarters in Brussels to discuss support for Ukraine, which topped the agenda. The focus was on the PURL list, or Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, where member countries purchase weapons from the US for delivery to Ukraine. So far, nations have bought American weapons worth about two billion dollars under the framework.

During the meeting, an additional dozen countries agreed to join, bringing the total to around 16 nations. 'More than half of the member states have now signed up,' said Secretary General Mark Rutte during a press conference. Among the weapons being sent are the Patriot air defense system and ammunition, crucial for Ukraine's defense against Russian attacks.

SVT's Europe correspondent Christoffer Wendick noted: 'An additional dozen countries have agreed to buy American weapons.' He added that the situation for Ukraine has been serious, especially regarding air defense, and that access to these systems and ammunition has been highly significant.

Sweden, already part of PURL, is prepared to increase its contribution. Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) emphasized: 'We expect more to do more.' He pointed to an incorrect decline in support and called for more efforts to improve financial and military aid to Ukraine. Jonson also stressed the importance of more countries contributing further.
