MX Linux 25 Infinity released with Debian 13 base

MX Linux has released version 25, codenamed Infinity, updating to the Debian 13 Trixie base for enhanced stability and usability. The distribution now defaults to systemd while offering sysVinit alternatives, alongside improvements in desktops, tools, and installation. This cooperative project between antiX and former MEPIS communities provides editions for Xfce, KDE Plasma, and Fluxbox.

The release of MX Linux 25 Infinity marks a significant update for the Debian-based distribution, built on Debian 13 “Trixie” with MX’s repositories. Announced on November 11, 2025, it shifts core releases to include systemd by default, moving away from the project's historical use of sysVinit to improve compatibility with modern Debian packages and simplify maintenance. Users preferring sysVinit can download alternative editions.

Desktop environments see updates: Xfce to version 4.20, KDE Plasma to 6.3.6, and Fluxbox remaining at 1.3.7. Most installation images use the Debian 6.12.48 kernel, while Xfce Advanced Hardware Support (AHS) variants employ the Liquorix 6.16 kernel for better performance on newer hardware. The antiX live system has been adjusted for systemd compatibility, though sysVinit editions suit live environment users better.

MX Tools, the configuration suite, has migrated to Qt6. The apt-notifier is replaced by mx-updater, supporting either apt or nala backends. The installer introduces a “replace existing Linux install” function that uses fstab partition information for fresh setups while preserving home directories. It also adds support for 64-bit UEFI Secure Boot with signed Debian kernels and zram-swap devices, though AHS releases with Liquorix kernels do not support Secure Boot.

Other enhancements include MX Cleanup removing unused dkms drivers and extra manual pages; Fluxbox gaining new panel, menu configurations, and rofi integration; Audacious replacing Deadbeef as the audio player; KDE edition using Qimgv instead of Gwenview with Wayland as default (X11 available); and Xfce swapping File Roller for Engrampa. Revised themes, artwork, translations, and under-the-hood fixes are included. MX Linux 23 users should consult the migration guide on the official website before upgrading.

ISO downloads are available for Xfce, KDE, Fluxbox, and their sysVinit/AHS variants, each with sha256 checksums and signatures.
