Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex raised to yellow alert due to increased activity

The National Geology and Mining Service raised the alert level for the Nevados de Chillán Volcanic Complex from green to yellow after recording a sustained increase in seismicity and pyroclastic material emissions.

SERNAGEOMIN, through the Southern Andes Volcanological Observatory, made the decision on June 15, 2026, due to activity detected since late February. At least five pulses of pyroclastic material were observed reaching up to 160 meters in height, dispersing toward the southeast.

Authorities noted the possibility of low-magnitude explosions in the Nicanor crater, with risks of ballistic pyroclast ejection and ash emissions within a one-kilometer radius. SENAPRED declared a preventive early alert for the communes of Pinto and Coihueco.

The agency will maintain permanent monitoring in coordination with the Regional Disaster Prevention and Response System. The complex has recorded eruptive episodes in previous cycles between 2015 and 2022.
