Newcastle United secured their first Premier League away win of the season with a convincing 4-1 triumph over Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday. Malick Thiaw scored twice, including the fastest goal of the campaign after just 52 seconds, while Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade also found the net for the visitors. Everton's consolation came from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but they dropped to 14th in the table as Newcastle rose to 11th.
The match kicked off with an explosive start for Newcastle, as Malick Thiaw headed home Lewis Miley's inswinging corner after only 52 seconds, surpassing Phil Foden's earlier record of 59 seconds set for Manchester City against Leeds United. This gave Eddie Howe's side an immediate lead at Hill Dickinson Stadium, ending their winless run on the road.
Newcastle extended their advantage in the 25th minute when Miley volleyed Dan Burn's cut-back past Jordan Pickford, the ball deceiving the goalkeeper and finding the net. Lewis Hall's deflected shot then looped onto the crossbar, highlighting Everton's defensive struggles. Just before halftime, Nick Woltemade chipped Pickford to make it 3-0 at the break.
In the second half, Everton pushed forward. Carlos Alcaraz struck the crossbar, and Harvey Barnes and Woltemade drew saves from Pickford. Thiaw added his second goal from Hall's delivery, making it 4-0. Thierno Barry's 65th-minute goal was ruled out for handball by VAR, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall soon netted a consolation with a fine touch and finish, reminiscent of his performance against Manchester United.
Newcastle dominated throughout, with Howe praising the impact of lineup changes. 'I’m very grateful to the players for that [result], because it means I’m not asked so many questions about the away form,' Howe told Sky Sports. 'Obviously we’ve got a lot to prove but today was a big step forward. I thought the players played really well – it was a good performance.' He noted the team looked 'sharp and fresh,' reducing fatigue issues from prior away games.
Everton, coming off a 1-0 win at Manchester United despite Idrissa Gueye's red card for slapping teammate Michael Keane, couldn't replicate their resilience. Newcastle, winless in their last four league meetings with Everton (two draws, two losses), now prepare for Tottenham at St James' Park on Tuesday.
