South Korean director Park Chan-wook has assembled an all-star cast for his Western thriller 'The Brigands of Rattlecreek,' starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, Oscar nominee Austin Butler, Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal and Chinese actress Tang Wei. Park will direct and adapt the screenplay originally written by S. Craig Zahler. The package is set to hit the market at the Cannes Film Festival.
Park Chan-wook, known for films such as 'Oldboy,' 'The Handmaiden' and 'No Other Choice,' is directing the project as a passion endeavor. The story is described as an iconic tale of vengeance and retribution set in the American West. According to a synopsis, it serves as a capstone to Park's thematic explorations, offering an emotionally explosive meditation on violence, family, memory and the cost of life, as first reported by Variety on April 24, 2026. It promises visual stunner elements true to Park's style. McConaughey has prior ties to the script, which appeared on the 2006 Black List. Amazon once acquired rights and considered him for the lead role in 2019. Park's English-language debut was 'Stoker' in 2013, following adaptations from authors like Donald Westlake, Sarah Waters and Emile Zola. The film will be represented for international sales by Patrick Wachsberger’s 193, a Legendary company, at Cannes where Park presides over the jury. Producers include Park and Back Jisun for Moho Film, alongside Bradley Fischer of 'Zodiac.' Executive producers are Mike Medavoy and Georgia Kacandes.
