A ruling by the Mark- och miljööverdomstolen stopping logging by the Hyttsten family in Konäs has led several parliamentary parties to call the current system unreasonable.
The ruling means the family cannot log the forest due to risks to the three-toed woodpecker. Lia Hyttsten describes the outcome as a major economic catastrophe and states that the family has lost usage rights on 70 percent of their forest assets.
Kurt Hyttsten is upset that the forest can no longer be used as security for bank loans. He says it feels almost criminal.
Moderaterna, Liberalerna and Centerpartiet stress that the effect of the current system harms both the environment and forest owners. They advocate full state compensation and a more proportionate application of species protection rules.
