Two Pennsylvania caregivers were arrested and charged with abusing and neglecting a 20-year-old woman with Down syndrome in their care. Yahnae Clegg-Brown and Naiyr "Hasan" Sanders face multiple counts including abuse of a care-dependent person.
Yahnae Clegg-Brown, 31, and Naiyr "Hasan" Sanders, 35, were arrested on July 7 in Colwyn, Delaware County. They are accused of systematically underfeeding the victim, physically assaulting her, and forcing her to stand outside in cold rain for hours with her belongings in a trash bag.
Police responded after an anonymous report on April 25 about a person crying outside a home for hours in 40-degree weather. Officers found the woman soaked and in distress, and hospital staff later reported she weighed 82 pounds and showed signs of severe malnourishment.
Prosecutors allege the victim lost 40 to 50 pounds while living with the defendants for two years. She received no regular medical care or schooling during that time. Video evidence reportedly shows Sanders pushing her down steps and punching her.
Both remain jailed after failing to post bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 16. Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse called the alleged abuse heartbreaking and said his office will hold those responsible accountable.
