Police chief orders security changes for president ruto after kilifi incident

Inspector General Douglas Kanja has ordered immediate changes to President William Ruto’s security detail following a breach during a public event in Kilifi County on May 24.

The incident occurred during a thanksgiving ceremony for Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs. A civilian approached the podium while President Ruto was speaking and was tackled by security officers. Ruto urged his team to “leave that young man alone” and later said he would “deal with him later.”

Kanja issued a statement the same day announcing a special investigations team and warning the public against breaching security protocols at events involving national leaders. He described the matter as a grave concern requiring strict measures.

This marks at least the third such incident this year, following similar events in Wajir County on February 12 and Mombasa on February 6. Earlier breaches occurred in Migori County in May 2025.
