Retroid Pocket 6 reveals final design and PS2 emulation

The Retroid Pocket 6 gaming handheld has reached completion, with its maker sharing the first official images and videos of the device running PlayStation 2 games. Customers can now choose between D-pad or thumbstick configurations following early design feedback. Shipments for initial preorders are set to begin next month.

Retroid, a handheld gaming device manufacturer, has unveiled the final version of its Retroid Pocket 6 after addressing initial challenges. The company posted product photographs in black and orange on the social platform X, alongside footage demonstrating the device emulating PlayStation 2 titles. This marks the first real-world glimpse of the handheld in action, showcasing its capability to run games from older consoles.

The Retroid Pocket 6 entered the market amid some turbulence. Early reactions criticized the original design, prompting Retroid to revise it by offering buyers a choice: a D-pad or a second thumbstick on the left side of the device. Production faced further delays due to a global memory shortage, which forced the early bird discount to end prematurely. Originally priced at $209 for preorders through January, the deal was canceled in late December, raising the cost to the standard $229.

Despite these setbacks, the device's specifications remain robust. It features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, up to 12GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a TF card slot. The handheld supports emulation for games up to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 2 eras, appealing to retro gaming enthusiasts.

Retroid now anticipates smooth rollout. The first batch of preorders will ship in January, while subsequent orders are slated for March. This development positions the Retroid Pocket 6 as a competitive option in the growing retro handheld segment.
