Serena Williams will return to singles competition at Wimbledon after accepting a wildcard on June 21. The 44-year-old, who last played singles at the 2022 US Open, will also compete in doubles alongside her sister Venus.
Rick Macci, who coached Williams early in her career, assessed her chances on grass. “Can Serena win Wimbledon? No. Can she beat top-ten players? Yes,” he said on June 24. Macci noted that movement on the surface remains the key challenge but added that her power and experience could still trouble opponents.
Former world No. 1 Andy Roddick highlighted the boldness of her approach. On his podcast he said he would have scheduled seven warm-up events before attempting a Grand Slam return. Williams has so far played only two doubles matches since ending her four-year absence.
The All England Club kept the final women’s singles wildcard available until she decided. Williams is scheduled to face an early-round opponent who could include top seeds such as Aryna Sabalenka or Iga Swiatek. She has also confirmed plans to contest doubles with Venus Williams for the first time in several years.
