Sifuna insists he remains ODM secretary general after founders' meeting

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has reaffirmed that he remains the party's secretary general despite President Ruto holding an ODM founders' meeting as previously threatened. He made the remarks while engaging with widows in Bomachoge, Kisii County. Meanwhile, Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo has threatened to quit ODM if the party ends ties with the government.

Edwin Sifuna, secretary general of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), addressed widows in Bomachoge Borabu Constituency, Kisii County, on November 21, 2025. He reiterated that he remains the party's secretary general, despite President William Ruto hosting an ODM founders' dinner on November 16, 2025, in Mombasa, during the ODM @20 celebrations. Sifuna claimed he had survived threats from the president, which began on April 12, 2025, at the burial of Raila Odinga's bodyguard in Siaya, where Ruto warned Sifuna to tread carefully or face a founders' meeting to discipline the Nairobi senator.

As secretary general, Sifuna is mandated by the party constitution to speak on behalf of ODM. On October 27, 2025, he read an ODM press statement clarifying that the party would remain in the broad-based government until 2027. He was also part of the inter-party working group that drafted the 10-point agenda of the Memorandum of Understanding between ODM and UDA.

However, divisions within ODM are widening. Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo, speaking to his constituents on November 20, 2025, threatened to quit the party if ODM ends collaboration with Ruto's administration. "I am an ODM MP, but I decided to support the broad-based government because Raila himself gave such directions," Nabulindo stated. He criticized ODM politicians for instigating protests, saying there is no need to return to the streets. "As the people of Western, we have decided that we will remain in the broad-based arrangement and there is no going back to the streets in the name of Maandamano," he reiterated.

Nabulindo added that if Nyanza leaders return to opposition, they would leave ODM to them and back Ruto's administration. These statements highlight growing tensions in ODM over ties with the government, with figures like Babu Owino and Siaya Governor James Orengo also criticizing the arrangement.
