Businessman and former official Simón Levy denied being detained in Portugal by Interpol and revealed he was the victim of an assassination attempt against him in Washington, United States. He accused Morena members of death threats due to his criticisms of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He claimed the arrest warrants against him are false and part of a smokescreen.
Simón Levy, businessman and former undersecretary of Tourism during Andrés Manuel López Obrador's administration, categorically denied the claims by President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office about his alleged detention in Portugal. In a radio interview with Luis Cárdenas, Levy stated: “Of course not (am I detained), it's completely false. I understand that the president of Mexico said I'm detained in Portugal, that's completely false. On the contrary, I received an attack almost 10 hours ago.”
The incident occurred in Washington, where Levy resides with his family, whom he has taken out of Mexico due to death threats. He recounted that two subjects approached him, two shots were heard, but he managed to escape by quickly getting into an armored car. “Fortunately nothing happened to me. There were two shots; two people approached me, I reacted impressively. I got into an armored car quickly and was able to leave. I escaped by a miracle,” he explained.
Levy directly pointed to “people from the Morena party” as responsible for the intimidations. “I have received several threats, directly from people from the Morena party. Yesterday was the most precise: they told me that if I kept getting involved with Andrés Manuel López Obrador, they would not only kill me, but also my children. Fortunately, my children are not in Mexico,” he asserted. He indicated that the threats arose from his criticisms of López Obrador's government plan.
Regarding the arrest warrants, Levy described them as fabricated. One accuses him of hitting a door, when in reality they were trying to murder his youngest son. The other, about building two levels in a Polanco building, he has already won and it is prescribed: “The Prosecutor's Office recognized me as a victim, a collegiate judge confirmed it, and I won everything.” He claimed it is all a “smokescreen” to cover up the attack.
