Six die in head-on crash at Soysambu near Gilgil

Six people have died in a head-on collision between a private car and a bus early Saturday at Soysambu near Gilgil on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. The crash involved a Nissan Wingroad carrying six men and a Promise Bus Company vehicle. Police say more than 30 bus passengers escaped unharmed.

The crash occurred around 4am according to one report, though another states 9am early Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Soysambu near Gilgil. A Nissan Wingroad private car, heading to Nakuru or to Nairobi from Kisumu per differing accounts, collided head-on with a Promise Bus Company vehicle while its driver attempted to overtake another at high speed. All six occupants of the car died at the scene.

Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio said: “The Nissan was coming from Kisumu heading to Nairobi. All died on the spot. More than 30 passengers in the bus escaped unharmed. The bodies were taken to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital, where they await identification and post-mortem examination.”

Police cleared the wreckage, and traffic has resumed normally. Mwakio urged drivers to be cautious, especially with the holiday season approaching, and warned against speeding or reckless overtaking.

The Nairobi-Nakuru Highway has been dangerous, with sections like Gilgil–Kikopey–St. Mary’s–Mbaruk noted as high-risk areas. In a September incident, 12 to 14 family members died in a matatu-trailer collision at Kariandusi near Gilgil or Kikopey, according to varying reports.
