The accident took place at a school in Hassela, Nordanstigs municipality, shortly after 3 PM on Monday. A primary school pupil became trapped in a snow cave that collapsed, covering the child in large amounts of snow. School staff pulled the pupil free, and emergency services performed CPR on site before transporting the child to hospital by ambulance. According to P4 Gävleborg, the condition is serious.
Several students and staff witnessed the event, prompting the school to activate a crisis group. Education chief Ulrika Segervald expressed grief in a statement on the municipality's website: “This is an incredibly sad event that we all – students and staff – need to process. The student health team with counselors will therefore be on site, and we are reinforcing with substitutes to support everyone who wants to talk and process the event.” Parents were urged to pick up their children, but the school plans to remain open on Tuesday with extra support.
Police have documented the scene and filed a report on causing bodily harm to investigate the sequence of events. There is no suspect in the case. The school will also conduct its own investigation.
