Sweden has strengthened its resources against forest fires since 2018, as SMHI warns of high risk across large parts of the country on Monday and Tuesday.
Forest fires are raging in southern France and central Spain. At the same time the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency has signed agreements for four firefighting aircraft and up to ten helicopters ahead of the fire season.
Six helicopters are on standby this week after the aircraft were sent to France. Unit chief Anders Edstam says the resources are mainly used to limit the spread of fires.
Local rescue services now work in regions which provides greater capability. The fire season has just over a month left and is in its most intense period.
Edstam notes that extremely dry and warm weather with strong gusts could create problems but considers it unlikely.
