Sweden's women's handball team got the World Cup start they hoped for by defeating Czech Republic 31-23 in the opening match. The championship is taking place in Germany and the Netherlands. Czech Republic started strongly with the first two goals, but after Elin Hansson scored 3-2 after 4 minutes and 38 seconds, Sweden never relinquished the lead. At halftime, Sweden led 17-13.

Despite some weak defensive play at times and missed breakaways, Sweden did not impress excessively but comfortably held on. Emma Lindkvist, who was one of the top scorers with six goals alongside Clara Lerby, told Viaplay: "I think overall it's quite stable. Even if it's just one or two goals up, I don't feel super stressed."

Goalkeeper Johanna Bundsen delivered a solid performance, especially in the second half. Head coach Tomas Axnér commented: "It was a good match to get with high intensity." Sweden's next encounter is against Cuba on Saturday evening. Lindkvist added: "We're on the right track, but it's far from decided."
