Tesla confirms Model S and X production halt with limited Plaid inventory left

Following its February announcement, Tesla has fully halted production of Model S and Model X at the Fremont factory, leaving only a few hundred vehicles in global inventory—mostly high-performance Plaid models. CEO Elon Musk urged buyers to order quickly as stock dwindles, freeing factory space for Optimus humanoid robot production.

Tesla suspended individual orders for new Model S and Model X in early April 2026, confirming the production halt first announced in February. With just hundreds of units remaining worldwide, primarily in the Plaid configuration, Musk encouraged immediate purchases. The Model S, launched in 2012, revolutionized EVs with superior acceleration, over-the-air updates, and luxury features. The 2015 Model X stood out with falcon-wing doors and seating for up to seven. These flagships demonstrated EVs' viability against luxury gas vehicles.

This shift at Fremont now prioritizes mass production of the Optimus robot, which Musk views as Tesla's biggest future growth driver.

Tesla has announced the end of production for its Model S and Model X vehicles, redirecting resources at its Fremont factory toward manufacturing the Optimus humanoid robot. CEO Elon Musk stated that production will cease by the end of the current financial quarter. This shift underscores the company's move into robotics and artificial intelligence.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced during a January 28 earnings call that the company will halt production of the Model S and Model X vehicles this spring. The decision aims to shift focus toward autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence initiatives. Despite being the lowest-selling Tesla models in 2025, the vehicles still outperformed several competitors.

Tesla announced in its Q4 2025 earnings call that it will cease production of flagship Model S (2012) and Model X (2015) by end-June 2026, redirecting low-utilization Fremont factory capacity to produce up to 1 million Optimus humanoid robots annually and Cybercab autonomous taxis starting H1 2026. CEO Elon Musk termed it an 'honorable discharge' for the legacy models, which saw ~30,000 deliveries in 2025 (~2% of total), signaling a pivot to AI, robotics, and full autonomy amid the company's first annual revenue decline and EV competition.

Tesla is undergoing a major strategic pivot amid a sharp sales decline in China, the end of Model S and X production to focus on robots, and plans to introduce its Semi truck in Europe. The company's challenges and ambitions are reflected in divided analyst opinions and ambitious production targets. This triple transition highlights Tesla's shift from traditional automotive manufacturing toward robotics and AI.

In its Q4 2025 earnings call, Tesla announced plans to repurpose Model S and X assembly lines at Fremont for 1 million Optimus 3 units annually and ramp high-volume Optimus V4 production at Giga Texas. CEO Elon Musk highlighted the robot's learning capabilities via observation and video, upcoming Gen 3 unveiling, and challenges like scaling amid Chinese competition, backed by $20 billion in 2026 capex.

The 2026 Tesla Model S and Model X can no longer be customized in Lunar Silver, a $2,500 paint option added in early 2024. Buyers must select from other colors or seek inventory vehicles. This development comes as the models enter their final production year.

Following Tesla's Q4 2025 earnings announcement to repurpose factories for Cybercab robotaxis and Optimus robots, CEO Elon Musk warned on X of 'agonizingly slow' early production rates due to the projects' novelty, though he expects eventual rapid scaling. This tempers expectations amid Tesla's push into AI and autonomy.
