TUXEDO Computers has announced that its Linux distribution will move to a Debian Testing base. The change ends the use of Ubuntu LTS releases. A beta testing phase is planned for the coming weeks.
TUXEDO OS serves as the default operating system on TUXEDO Computers hardware. It remains available for download and use on other machines as well.
The company cited multiple issues with Ubuntu. These include difficulties backporting newer packages on an aging LTS base, breakage from Qt updates, increased reliance on Snaps, an unclear AI roadmap, and slow security updates.
Under the new Continuous Debian approach, the distribution will stay on Debian Testing permanently. Btrfs will become the default file system with Snapper snapshots enabled before updates. No direct upgrade path exists for current users, who will need a clean install.
An extensive beta phase for non-production systems starts soon. TUXEDO Computers will also present details at the FrOSCon conference in August.
