Two Ethereum bridges lose $31.7 million within hours

AFX and Verus suffered combined losses of $31.69 million in separate incidents on the Ethereum network. A third protocol, B², halted staking after unauthorized access to its upgrade authority.

AFX lost 24.15 million USDC on July 22 after social engineering compromised its development environment and spread to build and validator systems. The protocol suspended its USDC custody bridge but said the incident did not affect its trading infrastructure or the Arbitrum network.

Hours later, the Verus bridge released 1,137.4528 ETH plus seven token transfers valued at $7.54 million. Analysis showed the bridge approved eight withdrawals without proof that matching reserves existed.

B² suspended normal staking after detecting unauthorized access to its staking contract upgrade authority. The network offered users a manual exit process through its Discord and said it would fully compensate affected users, though no loss amount was disclosed.
