Uber Eats driver found dead after final delivery in Chicago

A 28-year-old Uber Eats driver in Chicago was found unresponsive outside Loretto Hospital after completing a late-night food delivery, leading to a homicide investigation. Daniel Figueroa, who worked two jobs to support his family, had his van stolen in what police describe as a possible carjacking. Authorities have a person of interest in custody as the probe continues.

Daniel Figueroa, a 28-year-old Illinois resident, balanced shifts at Amazon and Uber Eats to provide for his family. On Sunday, he finished his Amazon work before beginning a late-night Uber Eats delivery run. At around 2 a.m. on Monday, Figueroa dropped off an order at Loretto Hospital in Chicago. This was intended to be his last stop of the night, as his father later told local media: "He was on his way home. This was going to be his last stop."

The customer, a doctor who placed the order, tracked Figueroa's approach via the app. Upon retrieving the food, the doctor discovered Figueroa lying unresponsive outside the hospital, with his van missing. Figueroa was rushed to another facility but was pronounced dead there. Police are treating the incident as a homicide, though no cause of death has been publicly released.

Surveillance footage captured Figueroa attempting to intervene as three individuals—reportedly two men and a woman—tried to take his van. He was dragged for about half a block before the vehicle fled. On Tuesday, authorities announced a person of interest was detained, though no suspects have been formally named.

Figueroa's girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero, shared that they had planned to celebrate her young son's birthday that Monday. She described Figueroa as the primary financial provider, treating her son as his own. A GoFundMe campaign she launched seeks funds for funeral costs and bills. Both Loretto Hospital and Uber have stated they are assisting law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
