Universidad de Chile lost 1-0 to Unión La Calera in the fifth round of the Copa de la Liga and complicated their chances of reaching the semifinals.
The team led by Fernando Gago fell at the Estadio Nicolás Chahuán Nazar after a goal by Carlo Villanueva in the 33rd minute. The U struggled to create clear chances and a penalty initially awarded in their favor was overturned after VAR review.
Gago harshly criticized referee Cristián Garay for the constant game stoppages. “The referee allowed not to play,” the coach said after the match broadcast on TNT Sports.
With the defeat the U remained with seven points in Group D and no longer depends on itself to advance. It needs to beat Audax Italiano and for La Calera not to earn points against Deportes La Serena in the final round.
