Virulent wildfire breaks out between Furiani and Biguglia

A highly virulent wildfire broke out Saturday afternoon in Haute-Corse between Furiani and Biguglia. More than 60 hectares have already been destroyed and homes remain threatened.

The alert was raised around 3:30 p.m. Firefighters from Bastia and Furiani responded at once with 90 personnel. A Puma Delta helicopter and a Canadair aircraft were deployed to battle the flames.

The fire split into two fronts, one advancing toward Biguglia and the other, more intense, toward Furiani amid swirling winds. The command post was set up near Furiani town hall.

No evacuations have been ordered so far. Commander Hervé Duvermy stated the priority is to contain the blaze along the ridge to prevent further advance toward inhabited areas. Armored vehicles are expected as reinforcements.
