This rollout makes Miami the newest addition to Waymo's operational areas, which already include Phoenix, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The service was announced as part of expansion plans revealed last year, with Miami among five cities targeted for growth.
The initial coverage spans a 60-square-mile area encompassing neighborhoods such as the Design District and Wynwood. Waymo intends to extend operations to Miami International Airport in the near future. Before opening to passengers, the company conducted testing in Miami starting in November, operating vehicles without riders to identify local driving challenges and refine its algorithms for smoother integration.
Interest in the service is strong, with almost 10,000 Miami residents registering ahead of the launch. Invitations for new users will roll out gradually over the coming weeks and months. Waymo emphasizes the safety of its technology, stating that it achieves a "ten-fold reduction" in serious crash-related injuries compared to human-driven vehicles in its current markets.
