Wilson's hat trick lifts Capitals to 6-3 win over Rangers

Tom Wilson delivered a Gordie Howe hat trick and scored his 200th career NHL goal as the Washington Capitals defeated the New York Rangers 6-3 on Wednesday. The Washington Capitals hosted the New York Rangers at Capital One Arena on December 31, 2025, in a New Year's Eve matinee game. Washington jumped ahead early when Anthony Beauvillier scored at 12:27 of the first period, firing a backhand feed from Ryan Leonard into the net for a 1-0 lead. The Rangers tied it 1-1 late in the frame at 19:20, as Vincent Trocheck tipped an Artemi Panarin shot past Charlie Lindgren.

In the second period, Tom Wilson took control. At 7:33, he delivered a heavy hit on Noah Laba at center ice, leading to a turnover and Wilson's goal that restored the 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later, Wilson fought Sam Carrick, who received a roughing minor, setting up a power play. Justin Sourdif converted at 11:12 with a one-timer from Alex Ovechkin, making it 3-1—Sourdif's first career power-play goal.

The Rangers narrowed the gap to 3-2 at 15:17 on Adam Fox's power-play shot from the point. Entering the third with a one-goal lead, the Capitals faced pressure, but Lindgren made key stops, including a windmill save on Gabe Perreault during a 2-on-1.

Rasmus Sandin fed Aliaksei Protas for a redirect goal at 13:34, extending the lead to 4-2. Wilson then scored his 200th career goal shortly after, making it 5-2. Braden Schneider pulled one back for New York at 18:16, but Wilson assisted Sourdif's empty-netter in the final minute to seal the 6-3 win and complete his third Gordie Howe hat trick.

Caps coach Spencer Carbery praised Wilson's shift: "That may be one of the best shifts I’ve seen in a long time." The victory highlighted Wilson's impact, especially after learning of his Olympic selection alongside Thompson, the first Capitals to represent Canada.
