Winboat update enhances Windows app running on Linux

The latest release of Winboat, a tool for running Windows applications on Linux, introduces several new features including multi-monitor support and improved workflows. This beta version aims to simplify the process for users transitioning from Windows. While promising, it includes warnings about potential security risks.

Winboat offers a novel approach to running Windows apps on Linux by utilizing an instance of Windows, allowing applications to operate natively. The newest version, available for installation via .deb, .rpm, or AppImage from the official download page, brings significant enhancements to this beta software.

Key new features include a custom install path, support for sharing the /home folder, save state functionality to resume apps from their last position, multi-monitor support, auto-start containers, disk space warnings, and an improved general workflow. It now incorporates noVNC for web browser access and experimental Dynamic USB pass-through.

However, the changelog warns: "Sharing your home folder exposes your Linux files to Windows-specific malware and viruses. Only enable this feature if you understand the risks involved. Always be careful with the files you download and open in Windows." The author notes avoiding this feature due to these risks.

Multi-monitor support remains somewhat buggy, particularly with mismatched monitor layouts, such as one horizontal and one vertical, leading to unpredictable cursor behavior and issues with maximized windows. Despite these beta-stage limitations, the tool is praised for its elegant solution to running Windows apps on Linux.

Historically, alternatives like Wine required command-line setup and were challenging for early users. Future developments may include LookingGlass's indirect display driver for GPU passthrough, potentially improving performance for games and other apps. The author, with 30 years of Linux experience, views Winboat as a promising option for easing migrations from Windows 10 or 11.
