Wolfgang Kubicki defeated Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann in a leadership vote at the FDP federal party congress on May 30, 2026, in Berlin and is the new party chairman.
At the 77th FDP federal party congress in Berlin’s Estrel Hotel, Wolfgang Kubicki won a surprise leadership contest against Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. He received 390 votes to her 259, with around 1500 delegates and guests in attendance.
In his speech Kubicki stressed the FDP’s role as the party of civil rights. He said among other things: “Where there is freedom, everything is possible.” The party has faced a difficult situation since leaving the Bundestag.
Outgoing chairman Christian Dürr had earlier described the congress as a fresh start. After his victory Kubicki announced a clear stance, including on Saxony-Anhalt.
