A 48-year-old woman died on Saturday in Madrid after falling from the tenth floor of her building on Ricardo Ortiz Street, along with her three-year-old twin sons, who were seriously injured. The children were rushed to hospitals in critical condition. Police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide, ruling out gender violence.
The incident took place around 9:00 a.m. in the Ventas neighborhood, Ciudad Lineal district. The 48-year-old woman fell from her tenth-floor apartment with her twin sons, who had turned three the previous Friday. They were dressed in street clothes and sneakers, landing in a garden area. Samur confirmed the mother's death at the scene, while the children, Iker and Daniel, were rushed to hospitals: one to Niño Jesús and the other to 12 de Octubre.
A nearby cafeteria worker heard a loud crash at 8:45 a.m. and saw police arrive quickly. Neighbors said the woman lived alone with the boys, divorced and suffering from depression and persecutory delusions; she claimed she was being spied on. The children were conceived via in vitro fertilization and cared for by a Filipina woman. She had recently moved to the building.
The National Police took over the investigation after involvement from Municipal Police and firefighters. They entered the home, seizing a mobile phone, laptop, and notebooks with notes, but found no suicide note. Police sources ruled out gender violence and pointed to suicide. Neighbors heard the woman shouting her intentions minutes before.
By 9:00 p.m., medical updates showed one twin, operated on for six hours due to traumas and a lung injury, remaining in very serious condition in the ICU. The other, at Niño Jesús, has a better prognosis and is with his aunt and grandfather. The neighborhood was shocked, with residents noting the family's isolation and the children's charm.
Experts note that suicides are preventable and involve multiple factors. Helplines include 024 for suicidal ideation or 112 for emergencies.
