Wrong-way driver dies after crash on federal road

A 68-year-old man died in an accident on federal road B2 in North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday evening. He was driving the wrong way and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the other car was seriously injured.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening around 8 p.m. on federal road B2 near Minden. According to police, the 68-year-old man was driving in the wrong direction from Porta Westfalica. He collided head-on with a car driven by a 45-year-old woman coming from Minden.

The wrong-way driver succumbed to his severe injuries at the scene. The woman in the other vehicle was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Emergency services and police arrived quickly to secure the site.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation. Police suspect a possible medical emergency or alcohol influence, but details are not yet known. Traffic on the B2 was temporarily blocked in both directions to allow for vehicle recovery.

Wrong-way driving accidents are unfortunately not uncommon on German roads and regularly claim lives. Authorities urge drivers to pay attention to signs and markings to prevent such tragedies. A police press release stated: "We mourn the victim and wish the injured woman a speedy recovery."
