Young Washington opens to $20.8 million at box office

Angel Studios' historical drama Young Washington posted a $20.8 million opening weekend, setting a live-action record for the company. Director Jon Erwin announced that a sequel titled 1776 is already in development.

The film, which stars William Franklyn-Miller as a young George Washington alongside Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis, Mary-Louise Parker and Kelsey Grammer, exceeded its $15 million forecast during the July 4 holiday period. It performed strongly in the Mountain, Midwest, Southcentral and South regions, which accounted for 67 percent of its domestic gross.

Angel Studios EVP of Theatrical Brandon Purdie said the response from audiences during the nation's 250th anniversary celebration has been meaningful. Director Jon Erwin added that sharing Washington's story of failure, perseverance and sacrifice has been one of the greatest honors of his career.

Chris Pratt promoted the movie on social media after a screening, comparing it to The Revenant, Pride and Prejudice and Braveheart. The picture earned an A CinemaScore and an 81 percent definite recommend on PostTrak.
