The Aam Aadmi Party has accused the BJP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi of criminal negligence after multiple deaths from falls into open drains in the capital. Opposition leader Ankush Narang demanded accountability and compensation for victims' families.
The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday accused the BJP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi of criminal negligence over deaths caused by people falling into open drains across the national capital.
Leader of the Opposition in the MCD Ankush Narang said several people have died in such incidents over the past two and a half months. He cited specific cases including a 30-year-old man in Rohini, two-year-old Ayesha in Burari, Rahul Singh in Dilshad Garden and Birju Singh in Rohini Sector 32.
Narang alleged that the BJP tried to suppress the matter in every incident and demanded strict action against errant officials along with compensation of one crore rupees for each victim's family. He also noted that drain cleaning works have stalled ahead of the monsoon, raising risks of waterlogging.
A man died after falling into an open drain in Vijay Vihar on May 15 and a two-year-old girl from Mukundpur died after a similar incident on May 3, according to police reports. The Delhi BJP declined to respond to the allegations.
