Academics and senator question constitutional accusation against Nicolás Grau

A group of 36 academics and Senator Manuel José Ossandón criticized the constitutional accusation against former Finance Minister Nicolás Grau, which will be voted on Tuesday in the Senate.

The academics, in a letter titled “Acusación constitucional y legitimidad democrática”, stated that the facts imputed in the bill have been discarded by experts and the Autonomous Fiscal Council. They said that “the congressional oversight faculty is degraded” when this mechanism is used without a verified constitutional violation.

Ossandón, from Renovación Nacional, announced he will be absent from the vote because he will accompany President José Antonio Kast on a tour. He indicated he would have voted against, as “there is no constitutional infraction”.

The senator added that the accusation damages the unity of the ruling coalition. Senator Vlado Mirosevic, from the Liberal Party, decided to stay in Chile to vote against the bill.
