Adeniyi Adeyemi has rejected allegations that he forged documents and impersonated an official while claiming to head a nonexistent presidential council. Speaking on television, he said he is prepared to face the courts to clear his name.

Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claims to be director-general of the disputed Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on July 2. He stated that he holds a letter of appointment and that Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila was aware of it. Adeyemi said, “Definitely, sir. If I’m wrong, let the court of law do that, and if I’m right, let the court of law do that; do the right thing.”

The presidency has described the council as fictitious and accused Adeyemi of using forged documents to open a Central Bank of Nigeria account. Officials said he and two others face an eight-count charge of forgery, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Adeyemi declined to discuss funding for the council’s staff and called on President Bola Tinubu to set up an independent panel. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 27.
