Américo Villarreal promises justice in Dafne Zapata death

Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal promised to apply the full weight of the law after the death of teenager Dafne Zapata at a militarized academy.

During a work tour on Tuesday, July 28, in El Mante, Villarreal was approached by Dafne's grandmother, Juana Laura Martínez, who demanded justice. The governor replied that proceedings against three detainees continue and that preventive prison will be imposed on the director of the Academia Militarizada Marina Doenitz, an instructor and a cadet.

The Secretaría de Educación Pública stated on Monday, July 27, that militarized schools are illegal under the Constitution. Secretary Mario Delgado said notices were sent to state education departments to remind them that this type of modality cannot be authorized.

Five schools offering militarized education were identified in Tamaulipas, though only some have official registration with the state Secretaría de Educación. Investigations into the death of 13-year-old Dafne continue under feminicide protocol.
