Astrologer and sangoma Rod Suskin dies at 63

Rod Suskin, a leading South African astrologer and sangoma, died in Cape Town on 18 July 2026 after a long illness. He was 63.

Rod Ronnen Suskin was born in Johannesburg on 1 January 1963. He studied psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand before training as a sangoma in Swaziland, now Eswatini. He combined this with Western astrology, using birth charts and tarot cards instead of traditional bones.

Suskin built a career spanning four decades. He hosted radio and television segments, wrote books, and founded the Rod Suskin School of Astrology. He later earned a master’s degree in cultural astronomy and astrology from the University of Wales and lectured at the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University medical schools.

He is survived by his mother Mina, brothers Joseph and Danni, daughter Nokukhanya, and sons Vuyalithongo and Malivuye. He was predeceased by his father Edward and his husband Chris Ntombemhlophe Reid.
