Banyana Banyana prepare for Algeria friendlies ahead of Wafcon

South Africa's Banyana Banyana have returned to camp in Durban for two friendly matches against Algeria. The games form part of preparations for the postponed CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in July. Coach Desiree Ellis highlighted the benefits of the timing and conditions.

South Africa's national women's soccer team, Banyana Banyana, is in camp in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, ahead of two international friendlies against Algeria. The matches, at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Tuesday 14 April at 4pm and King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday 17 April, mimic the hot conditions expected in Morocco for the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, now set for July and August.

Coach Desiree Ellis expressed satisfaction at arranging the games on short notice. "Lucky to have gotten a friendly at such short notice... coming to Durban is probably similar to what we will face in Wafcon weather-wise because it is going to be extremely hot," she said. Ellis noted Algeria's possession-based style differs from recent west African opponents.

The team is focusing on improving finishing in the final third, an area of struggle in the previous Wafcon and the Cosafa Cup this year. "We are a team that can create a lot of chances... it’s just the decision making in the final third," Ellis added. Management aims to keep players physically strong and mentally fresh.

These fixtures provide vital preparation as Banyana Banyana build towards the continental tournament.
