Bogotá's mayor's office opens south sidewalk of Calle 45 in Chapinero

Bogotá's mayor's office announced the opening of the new south sidewalk of Calle 45, between Carrera Séptima and Carrera Quinta, in Chapinero locality. The project adds over 2,000 square meters of public space and aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and residents. Multiple agencies collaborated to finish the work.

Bogotá's mayor's office has opened the south sidewalk of Calle 45 between Carrera Séptima and Carrera Quinta in Chapinero. This development creates over 2,000 m² of new public space, enabling safer movement for residents and the floating population in the area.

Orlando Molano, general director of the Urban Development Institute (IDU), stated: "We have enabled the south side of Calle 45 from Carrera Séptima to Carrera Quinta. Following the mayor's instructions, we worked jointly with several entities, the Road Maintenance Unit, the Mobility Secretariat, Uaesp, Aguas de Bogotá, Enel, Aqueduct, and Botanical Garden, to enable this side, and today it is a reality; people and cars are already passing through."

Implemented measures include the installation of new public lighting, signage on the south side, and the adaptation of public spaces and green areas. Mónica Rueda, director of the Road Maintenance Unit (UMV), emphasized: “For us, it has been important to work hand in hand with the other entities to ensure mobility and safety for all people, pedestrians, students, and citizens who travel through this important sector of Calle 45 between Carrera Séptima and Carrera Quinta. We supported the completion of the sidewalks on Transversal Quinta to improve the experience for everyone.”

The project is part of works outlined in Valorization Agreement 25 of 1995. The IDU took possession of the work on January 23, 2026, after the contract with Belzcon S.A.S ended with only 43.39% progress. The contract was declared caducated, and the contractor filed a reconsideration appeal under review. Molano added: “It is very important to tell Bogotans that the contract ended and unfortunately the contractor did not finish the works; it has an ongoing sanction process. The new bidding opened on March 3, and we expect to award it this year so that the north side becomes a reality next year.”
