Carolina Hurricanes claim Primeau off waivers and recall Bayreuther

The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed goaltender Cayden Primeau off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs and assigned him to the Chicago Wolves. The team also activated forwards Eric Robinson and William Carrier from injured reserve while recalling defenseman Gavin Bayreuther from the AHL and placing Jalen Chatfield on injured reserve.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Eric Tulsky, general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced two significant roster transactions on the same day. The Hurricanes claimed 26-year-old goaltender Cayden Primeau off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Primeau, originally acquired by Carolina from the Montreal Canadiens on June 30 in exchange for a seventh-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft, was recently claimed by Toronto on Oct. 6. In three games with the Maple Leafs, he posted a 2-1-0 record with a 4.30 goals-against average. Earlier in the 2024-25 season with Montreal, Primeau appeared in 11 NHL games, recording a 2-3-1 mark, 4.70 GAA and .836 save percentage. The Farmington Hills, Michigan native, standing at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, has a career NHL record of 15-25-7 with a 3.73 GAA, .882 SV% and two shutouts in 58 games across Montreal and Toronto. In the AHL, primarily with the Laval Rocket last season, he went 21-2-3 with a 1.96 GAA and .927 SV% in 26 games, earning the 2025 Harry Holmes Memorial Award for best goaltending duo alongside Connor Hughes.

In related moves, the Hurricanes activated forwards Eric Robinson and William Carrier from injured reserve. Additionally, they recalled 31-year-old defenseman Gavin Bayreuther from the Chicago Wolves, where he has tallied six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in nine games this season. Bayreuther, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound native of Concord, N.H., spent the 2024-25 season with Lausanne HC in Switzerland, registering 23 points (5 goals, 18 assists) in 52 regular-season games and eight points (2 goals, 6 assists) in 18 playoff games. He has 28 points (5 goals, 23 assists) in 122 NHL games with Dallas and Columbus, and 123 points (28 goals, 95 assists) in 247 AHL games. To accommodate the recall, defenseman Jalen Chatfield was placed on injured reserve.

These adjustments come amid early-season challenges for the Hurricanes, including navigating injuries to key players.
