The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki announced the death of its bishop, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Chukwu, who died on April 10, 2026, after a brief illness. Vicar General Fr. Donatus Chukwu signed the statement, noting the bishop was born on November 5, 1965, ordained a priest on July 3, 1993, and installed as the third bishop on August 19, 2021, succeeding Bishop Michael Nnachi Okoro.

Bishop Chukwu was from Umuezeokoha in Ezza North LGA of Ebonyi State. He studied philosophy at Seat of Wisdom Seminary from 1985 to 1989 and theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, from 1990 to 1993. Sources said he had kidney problems and died after a transplant at an undisclosed hospital.

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru described the bishop's passing as shocking in a personally signed condolence message. He said: “It is with a heart weighed down by deep sorrow, yet comforted by the eternal promises of God... Bishop Chukwu distinguished himself as an icon of faith, a promoter of peace, and a tireless advocate for justice, unity and love.”

The diocese urged priests, religious and lay faithful to pray for the late bishop and the diocesan family. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
