Cinemark adds 70mm IMAX screens for Nolan's 'The Odyssey'

Cinemark has announced an expansion of its partnership with IMAX, adding new 70mm film projection systems and laser upgrades to several theaters ahead of Christopher Nolan's upcoming film 'The Odyssey.' The upgrades aim to enhance premium viewing experiences across the U.S. and South America. The changes will be operational before the movie's July 17, 2026, release.

Partnership Expansion Details

Cinemark and IMAX have signed a new agreement to bolster premium large-format screenings. This includes building three new 70mm film projection systems and four new IMAX with Laser systems in the United States. Additionally, Cinemark will upgrade its existing 12 IMAX screens to the IMAX with Laser technology, which provides 4K laser projection for sharper images and superior audio. The overall deal covers 17 theaters, reflecting Cinemark's strategy to offer differentiated cinematic experiences.

The new 70mm locations will be at Cinemark Seven Bridges in Woodridge, a suburb of Chicago; Cinemark Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs; and Cinemark Tinseltown in Rochester. Cinemark already operates one such system at Cinemark Webb Chapel in Dallas. These additions bring the total number of worldwide theaters equipped for IMAX 70mm to beyond the current 30, catering to demand driven by filmmakers like Nolan and Denis Villeneuve who favor the format for its immersive quality.

Preparation for 'The Odyssey'

The upgrades are timed specifically for 'The Odyssey,' Nolan's first project shot entirely in IMAX film, set for theatrical release on July 17, 2026. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond stated, “Cinemark expanding its commitment to the very best of what IMAX has to offer — both IMAX with Laser and IMAX 70mm film — underscores the value we’re delivering for our exhibition partners in today’s marketplace.” Cinemark President and CEO Sean Gamble added, “Upgrading our IMAX locations to IMAX with Laser and activating additional 70mm film systems further expands and enhances the immersive options we offer our guests.”

This move aligns with growing audience preference for premium formats amid a competitive streaming landscape, ensuring theaters like Cinemark remain competitive for high-profile releases.
