Deputy Carolina Marzán announced her resignation from the Party for Democracy (PPD) one day after failing to secure a Senate seat for the Valparaíso Region. In a letter to the Electoral Service (Servel), the lawmaker criticized the disconnection of the political class and the scant support from the national leadership for her candidacy. Marzán, who received nearly 85,000 votes, plans to continue contributing as an independent.
Carolina Marzán, deputy for District 6 and well-known actress, formalized her departure from the PPD by sending a letter to the director of the Electoral Service (Servel), Raúl García. This decision comes after failing to secure one of the five senatorial seats in the Valparaíso Region during Sunday's elections. Previously, on October 10, Marzán had resigned from the party's regional presidency, accusing a lack of support from the national board led by Senator Jaime Quintana.
In statements on Monday, the lawmaker explained that her resignation stems from deep reflection on the disconnection between the political class and citizens. “One of the facts that citizens rightly accuse is the disconnection of the political class from people, the way of doing politics, and the manner in which, many times, decisions are made from power spaces without really considering the needs of citizens,” she stated. She added that support for her candidacy was “almost null,” despite the nearly 85,000 votes obtained, resulting from her commitment, management, and transversal support.
Marzán, elected deputy in 2018 and reelected in 2022 for the PPD, thanked on social media those who supported her Senate bid. “I hope to continue contributing to the country, and especially to our Valparaíso Region, now as an independent citizen,” she concluded. This resignation occurs amid internal tensions in the party and mixed electoral results for the center-left.
